🔒 Trailer Security Advice We’re encouraging all trailer owners to take simple but effective steps to reduce the risk of theft. Trailers are often targeted because they can be moved quickly and sold on with ease, but the right precautions make a big difference.
🛡️ Strengthen Your Physical Security
• Use a high‑quality wheel clamp designed for your trailer type. Visible security is a strong deterrent. • Fit a hitch lock to prevent the trailer from being attached to a vehicle. • Secure trailers to a fixed point such as a ground anchor or sturdy post when stored at home. • Remove wheels if the trailer is not needed for long periods.
🎥 Improve Surveillance Around Your Property
• Install CCTV or a video doorbell covering the driveway or storage area. • Ensure good lighting, ideally motion‑activated, to remove hiding spots. • Keep gates locked and consider adding a secondary lock or alarmed padlock.
🧩 Make Your Trailer Identifiable
• Mark your trailer with a unique ID, postcode, or company name using permanent marking or a UV pen. • Record serial numbers, chassis numbers, and take clear photographs from multiple angles. • Use tracking devices, even inexpensive GPS tags, to increase the chance of recovery.
🚗 Be Security‑Smart When Out and About
• Park in well‑lit, busy areas when leaving your trailer unattended. • Reverse up to a wall or barrier to block access to the hitch. • Never leave tools or valuable items inside the trailer.
📢 Report Suspicious Activity
If you see unusual behaviour around trailers—unknown vehicles, people taking interest, or late‑night activity—please report it to the police via 101. Always call 999 in an emergency.
